DPW to conduct Sewer and Water Study to reduce runoff and groundwater from entering Sanitary Sewer System
The Department of Public Works is conducting a sewer and water investigation study to reduce rainwater runoff and groundwater from entering the sanitary sewer system, which causes additional water to be treated therefore increasing the service charge to the sewer ratepayer. Additionally, the project will be identifying construction materials for every water service in the City.
On behalf of the City of Rochester, Weston and Sampson will be conducting sewer and water inspections from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm between now and May 2024 (weather dependent). Sewer inspections will be conducted in areas identified with high infiltration and inflow contributions.
The purpose of these inspections is to locate sources of inflow into the sewer system from sources such as basement sump pumps, roof downspouts/drains, foundation drains, and driveway drains that are improperly connected to the sewer system. The flow contributed to the sewer system by these sources is clean and does not require treatment. The inspections are also being completed to satisfy the requirements of the recently implemented EPA Lead and Copper Rule. Under the rule, the City must identify construction materials for every water service in the City. If lead or galvanized materials are found in your building’s water service, the City will notify you and advise of replacement options.
The inspections, lasting about 10-15 minutes, will be performed by a two-person team. The team will need access to your building’s basement where the water and sewer services exit the foundation. The exterior of each building will also be checked for potential inflow sources. All persons performing sewer inspections will have proper photo identification. For your convenience sewer and water inspections may be scheduled in advance by calling (603) 988- 0143. If an appointment is not scheduled, inspectors will make two attempts to visit properties within the project area to request permission to enter the building and complete their inspection. Inspectors will not enter buildings without permission.
The City of Rochester is requesting every home and property owner to take part in the Sewer and Water Inspection Program.
