South Main Street Project Set to Resume Work in the Street on April 7
Road construction is set to resume on the South Main Street project next Monday, April 7. Initially, work will focus on the vicinity of the Columbus Avenue and South Main Street intersection, where work on the traffic signals will commence. Additionally, drainage work will occur in the vicinity of the intersection of South Main Street and Whitehall Road and on Franklin Street just east of South Main Street. Motorists should be alert for lane closures and police details stopping traffic for short durations. Work will continue in the South Main Street between Crockett Street and Academy Street until November.
This year most of the work will be focused in the area between Franklin Street and Academy Street where gas main relocations and the installation of new drainage, water main, curbing and sidewalks will take place. There is still about two to three months worth of work remaining on South Main Street south of Franklin Street, but most of this work will be focused on the roadside as sidewalks and curbing are installed. Additionally, the traffic signals at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and South Main Street will be improved and new traffic signals at South Main Street and Franklin Street will be installed.
All businesses will be accessible within the corridor during construction. Motorists should be alert to the signage and the messages that will be displayed on the variable message boards that will be placed at each end of the construction limits and to police and flagging details that will be placed where construction crews are working.
