Rochester Government Channel

The Government Channel's Mission is to make local government more accessible to Rochester residents. We have three general areas of service - live cablecasts and repeats of public meetings, information posted via the “bulletin board” and special programming. The cablecast of Rochester Public Meetings would not be possible with out our volunteers. Please click here if you have an interest in volunteering for the Government Channel.

Can I get a copy of a Public Meeting?  Yes, the City can make DVDs for the Public Meetings listed above. For a DVD copy of a Public Meeting please contact the City Clerk’s Office at 332-2130. There is a $10 charge per copy. Most Public Meetings on DVD since January 2006 are available, for viewing only, at the Reference Desk at the Rochester Library, 335-7550.

Can my business or non-profit post a message on the CH26 bulletin board? No.  The Government Channel is not the same as a "Public Access" channel. (See PEG below) Municipal departments use the bulletin board to post messages regarding things like: Community Emergencies, Public Meeting Schedules, Dog Licensing, Car Registration, Voter Registration, Road Construction Detours, Water/Sewer work. You will also find information on programs offered by the Library and Recreation Departments, announcements on government related events and activities, as well as announcements from Federal and State agencies.

Why does a Government Channel produce or run special programming? Special Programming serves the objective of creating a better an understanding of municipal government functions and services, as well as illustrating issues that impact municipal functions and our community. Please visit this page in the future for featured special programming.

What is PEG? (Public, Educational, Government) television and how did it come about?
When a community negotiates for a franchise agreement with their local cable provider, one of the things that the community can insist on getting is channel space for local public, education and government television as well as franchise fees to operate them. This is considered to be a payment of sorts for the right-of-way (ROW) that the cable company uses when it installs the cable lines throughout the community. (With permission from New Hampshire Coalition for Community Media.)
In Rochester, our PEG Channels are: CH26 – Government, CH25 – Educational (Schools) and CH12, Metrocast “Local Origination”

Where can I get additional information about the rules governing television and cable?  The official source is the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).  Click here for a link to their Home Page.
