Rochester River Walk Logo Design
The Rochester River Walk committee asked students at Spaulding High School to give us ideas for an identifying logo for the proposed River Walk. The River Walk begins just north of the Hanson Pines area and follows the Cocheco into the downtown, where a portion of the walk may be brought out onto the street. From the downtown the walk continues from the Wyandotte Mill to the Fairgrounds. Given the planned route, some portions of the trail will be forested and natural while others will be very “urban.”
The Committee asked that the planned route and the variation in it be considered in the design. For instance, it should be obvious that this River Walk will not be similar to the walking trails on the Waste Management property along the Isinglass River, which are intended to be “nature trails.”
Rochester River Walk Logo Design Criteria
The design needed to include a “brand” name for the River Walk. Suggestions included Rochester River Walk, Rochester City Stroll, or Rochester River Walk & City Stroll.
The completed design must be able to be reproduced in black & white/grayscale. The design should also work well in varying sizes so that it can be used in variety of ways, from letterhead to web-art.
The best design should probably be “thematic.” Possible themes include the river’s role in Rochester’s rich mill history, the river’s history relative to Native Americans in the greater Rochester area, or a modern theme depicting the river’s future role in Rochester’s success.
The River Walk committee judged the designs and a winner was chosen by a simple majority vote. The winner’s design and all rights to copy, use, or reproduce it become the property of the River Walk Committee. The winning design has become the official logo of the River Walk committee and the designer received a $50 gift certificate to a local (Rochester) business of the winner’s choosing.
Congratulations to Kendra Barnes for her winning submission!!!
There were two other designs that the Committee found very competitive. Christine Arsenault submitted this design:
and James Cain submitted this one.
The River Walk Committee is grateful to all of the students who took the time to submit a design. We are also grateful to Karen Good, Director of the Art Department who coordinated the effort at Spaulding High School.
